CAMPBELL – Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Wasko Funeral Home and at the Sacred Heart Church for William “Bill” M. Skelley, 91, who went to be with the Lord and join his beloved wife, Anne, at 6 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2010. He was surrounded by his four sons, Bill Jr. (Kathy), Dave, Gene and Thom (Amy) when he passed.
Bill was one of the oldest living members of the Sacred Heart Church, where he actively served as usher and volunteered at their Food Bank for almost 30 years. He was recognized for his charity leadership in 2001 by Bishop Thomas Tobin of the Youngstown Diocese.
A highly decorated World War II veteran, Mr. Skelley served in the 37th Division, 145th Infantry, where he received two Purple Hearts, and was active in the VFW and Honor Guard until his death. A lifelong resident of Campbell, he was affectionately known as the “Fifth Ward Councilman” for his service to the city, where he also served many years as a volunteer fireman and chief. Bill retired from Fowler Construction in 1983 and remained active on the Teamsters Local 377 Retiree Committee.
Mr. Skelley was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Catherine (McGarry); sisters, Mary Catherine “Sis” Misko and Doris “Doe” McCudden; and brothers, Thomas “Bud,” John, Eugene and James.
In addition to his four sons, he is survived by his sister, Elizabeth (John) Dubos; nine grandchildren, Erin, David, Geno, Megan, Brian, Jessica, Drew, Evan and Kieran; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Colleen and Mikey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews to whom he was affectionately known as “Uncle Bill.”
Donations will be divided between the Harvest Food Bank and Hospice House.
The Skelley family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and received friends Monday, Nov. 15. Interment was at St. John’s Cemetery in Coitsville.
