CAMPBELL – The Campbell Memorial Red Devils couldn’t stop hitting shots against the Akron Manchester Panthers Tuesday, March 8, knocking the favorites out of the contest to edge themselves over the 50 percent mark and a 12-11 record.
The three-pointers did it as Claxton LeBron hit three and Ty Underwood added two more to keep ahead until they sewed the game up at 49-45 for Coach Brian Danilov.
Top scorers were LeBron with 17, Underwood with 16 to pave the way for the showdown against the Ursuline Irish (14-6) on Friday in Salem. Aiding the victory was Dwaylon Letlo with 8, Lester Hughes 4 and Richard Bledsoe and Anthony Naze with 2 each.
The game was won by MHS in the third quarter when the Devils outscored them 13-9. The teams were tied in the other quarters as Akron’s Mark Noble scored 16 points to lead his team, aided by Kyle Dack with 8 and Greg Shoemaker, 7.
The win pitted the Red Devils against the 14-6 Irish on Friday for the Div. III title, but the team was shut down by Ursuline, who limited Campbell to 4 points in the first quarter and 8 in the second for a 36-12 lead.
Campbell’s DeWaylon Letlo was the only Red Devil scoring steadily with 12 points after three quarters, but he was finally stopped as Ursuline went on to win 66-34. The only other scoring came from Hughes with 8, Bledsoe 5, Devon Johnson 4, Ryan Stoddard 3, and Claxton LeBron 2, as the Red Devils could not put up a three-pointer and were out-rebounded 38-22.
They bow out of Div. III with a 12-12 season, losing seniors LeBron, Rieon Herns, Underwood, Trevon Jones and Jose Martinez. Ursuline goes on to Div. III action in Canton, led by their top scorers in the contest, Kiree Gregory, who had 21, Devonte Jenkins with 18 and Ryan Strollo with 16, who had four three-pointers in the first half to spark the Irish.
