COLUMBUS – The Ohio CPA Foundation, The Ohio Society of CPAs’ charitable affiliate, has awarded $36,900 in scholarships to 29 accounting majors across Ohio.
Each year, the Foundation offers regional college scholarships to students who:
• Are accounting majors enrolled at an NCA and/or AACSB accredited Ohio college or university
• Maintain a 3.0 GPA or better (overall or in accounting)
• Have completed intermediate financial accounting or comparable course with a grade of 3.0 or better
In addition, six college accounting majors who were among the top regional scholarship recipients competed for an additional award during the Foundation’s 11th Annual Scholarship Day. Held at OSCPA’s office in Dublin, Scholarship Day brings outstanding accounting students together with OSCPA members for a day of high-stakes competition, networking and fun.
The Scholarship Day candidates were:
• Kaylee Clark, Ashland University
• Aart den Hoed III, Miami University
• Sarah McCormick, University of Dayton
• Anthony Saxton, Xavier University
• Rebecca Simmons, Case Western Reserve University
• Raed Yaish, Franklin University
This year the competition was so impressive, the Foundation presented two students with Scholarship Day awards. Aart den Hoed III of Dayton received first-place honors with an award of $3,000. den Hoed will be enrolled in Miami University’s Masters of Accountancy program this fall. Raed Yaish of Dublin, an accounting and financial management major at Franklin University, received second-place honors with an award of $1,500.
“The competition was tough, so I’m thrilled that I received the $3,000 scholarship award,” said den Hoed. “As a non-traditional student who is transitioning into another career field, it’s a privilege to be among some of the rising stars of the accounting profession and to have the opportunity to meet experienced, successful CPAs from around the state.”
During the event, candidates participated in a series of one-on-one interviews with OSCPA member judges and answered questions before the full panel. Their answers allowed judges to evaluate students on their grasp of and ability to discuss key issues in the CPA profession.
Volunteer judge and Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees Jerry Esselstein, CPA, said, “Students exercise more than analytical accounting skills during Scholarship Day. Candidates also must demonstrate excellent interpersonal communications and sales abilities. This is a chance to find out if the students can think on their feet.”
