SUMMER EVENINGS AT THE GARDENS
The D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center will be open to visitors on Wednesday evenings until 8 p.m. through August. The Antonucci Library and Shop in the Gardens will have extended hours. The Garden Café will be open until 7 pm for your enjoyment of summer evenings at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

On the Terrace at 5
Wednesday, 5 – 7 pm
The Garden Terrace with the beautiful view of Lake Glacier is the place to relax and unwind after work. Enjoy a glass or two of wine while listening to the music of Acoustic Rain. The Garden Café will be open for visitors wishing to purchase food.

Tree Walk & Talk
Thursday, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Are you looking for a perfect tree for your front yard? Join Lynn Zocolo in the classroom and on a walk around Fellows Riverside Gardens to learn about many of the beautiful trees that are suitable for the home landscape. Take home a white fir or a red bud with planting instructions.  Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

Guided Tour of Fellows Riverside Gardens
Sunday, 2 – 3:30 pm
Celebrate Father’s Day by enjoying a leisurely walk in Fellows Riverside Gardens to admire the colorful hues of peonies and roses. A guide will point out highlights while sharing anecdotes and history. Sign in at the information desk on the afternoon of the tour.

Breakfast Botany: Poppy Family
Friday, 8:30 – 10 am
Start your morning with a brisk walk through the Gardens. Return to the Garden Café to enjoy a light breakfast and learn more about the plant family that includes poppies. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

Tour to Gardens of the Brandywine Valley
Register by June 30 with your deposit
Travel  to experience the beauty of the botanically rich area near Philadelphia. Garden stops include Chanticleer—A Pleasure Garden, Morris Arboretum, a few private gardens and Longwood Gardens highlighted by an evening fireworks and fountain show. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens for information.

Writing Workshop
Wednesday, 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Join Karen Schubert in writing about meaningful, everyday experiences while exploring various writing styles. All levels of experience are welcome; join in when you can. Bring a page or two of your writing to share. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

Botanical Pottery: Green Man Garden Ornament
Tuesday, 5:30 – 8 pm
Lynn Cardwell will help students construct a summer “green man” wall ornament and will share the related garden folklore. The clay project will be glazed, fired, and ready for pick-up in approximately three weeks. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

HIKE FOR THE HEALTH OF IT!
Experience the beauty of the MetroParks with this series of escorted hikes. We’ve partnered with Northside Medical Center to bring you fun rewards for the 2012 season.

Interpretive hikes are generally slow-paced. Group will stop to learn about the hike’s topic.

June 3
Fishin’ Hike
Sunday, 2 pm
Bring your rod for this walk to Lake Glacier and try to catch a carp. We’ll provide the bait. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Moderate rating, 1 mile.

June 17
First Time in Sawmill Run
Sunday, 2 pm
We’ll walk within Sawmill Run for the first time. Wear boots or old shoes, and clothes you don’t mind getting wet. Meet on Deerpath Drive off Hitchcock Road. Moderate rating, 2 miles.

June 24
Discover Austintown Township Park
Sunday, 2 pm
Bill Whitehouse led monthly walks here for a decade. Join him as he gets reacquainted. Meet at Pritchard Gazebo. Call Ford Nature Center for directions. Moderate rating, 2 miles.

Recreational hikes are generally fast-paced and focus on exercising in the outdoors.

Join us for the health of it and experience the many benefits of walking.

Join us for this heart-pumping walk along the Boy Scout Trail. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Difficult rating, 10 miles.

Summer Solstice
Wednesday, 9 pm
On the first day of summer we hope to see lightning bugs galore and wonderful views of the Mahoning River! Meet at the Stavich Bicycle Trail at the eastern end of East Liberty Street in Lowellville. Moderate rating due to length and hill, 4 miles.

KAYAKING
All skill levels are invited on these escorted trips. Single and tandem kayaks are available; age restrictions apply. Participants must complete a waiver. Reservations are necessary and must be made 36 hours prior to program. Call Ford Nature Center for details.

Newport in Spring

Explore the late spring beauty of Lake Newport’s shores and wetlands. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.

Spring Cleaning!
Tuesday, 10 am – Noon
Help clean up the shores and wetlands of Lake Newport during this kayak excursion. Participants must have basic paddling skills. Bring gloves and “grabbers” if you have them. Free, but must pre-register at FNC. Thank you for helping!

Afternoon on the Water
Saturday, 1 – 3 pm
Join us for a relaxing paddle to observe the late spring flora and fauna of the Newport area. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.

Dusk at Glacier
Friday, 8 – 10 pm
Start out the summer with a first-ever evening paddle on the park’s “middle lake.” Not for first-time kayakers. Meet at Lake Glacier Boating Center.

BYOK: Lightning Bugs

Introduction to Photography

Ever wanted to know what all of those letters and numbers on your camera are and how they can make your photographic life easier. Learn how simple photographic strategies can give you more control and expand your creativity. Mill Creek MetroParks has partnered with YM Camera to offer this small hands-on class as the first part of a summer photography series. Registration and payment are due 36 hours prior to program. Birding the Sanctuary

Jeff Harvey of Wild Birds Unlimited will lead this walk at the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, a 264-acre park district property closed to the public. Call Ford Nature Center by June 15 for reservations. Upon registration you will receive additional details. No “walk ins” will be permitted.

Passport to Fishing
Saturday, 9 am – 2 pm
This program provides fishing skills, techniques and information for beginning anglers to start fishing in their own communities. Come join us for this fun and educational experience. Fishing equipment will be provided. For ages 17 and under. Lunch will be provided for a fee of $5.00. Call 330-740-7106 to register. Held at MetroParks Farm.

MetroMutts Hike: Arfy Birthday Ford Nature Center!

Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ford Nature Center with your favorite canine companion as we hike the All People’s Trail and explore the Center’s grounds. Enjoy cake and refreshments afterwards. Meet at FNC. Easy rating.

Preschool Nature Hour: Time Out for Trilobites!
Friday, 10 am or 12:30 pm, or Saturday 10 am
Rain or shine, preschoolers ages 3 – 5 are invited outdoors for a story and hike along Mill Creek. We’ll look for fossils, learn about Ohio’s state fossil—the trilobite, and create your own fossil. Meet at the Suspension Bridge parking lot. Preregister 24 hours in advance at Ford Nature Center. No strollers, please. Fee: $2 R, $3 NR

Family Garden Fun
Tuesdays, 10 am – 2 pm, Fridays, 10 am – 2 pm, Sundays, Noon – 3 pm
Plan a drop-in visit to the Family Garden on fair weather Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays to dig, water, pot a plant to take home, or read a book. The Family Garden Greeter will be happy to tell you about the plants and has free hands-on activities for children to enjoy with their favorite adults. Strawberry Hide and Seek
Thursday, 1 – 2 pm or Saturday, 11 am – Noon
Children ages 3 – 5 years will discover strawberry plants hiding throughout the Family Garden and decorate a pot for their special plant to grow in all summer. Snack and story will be enjoyed along with the activity. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

In the Time of Dinosaurs
Saturday, 1:30 – 3 pm
What kinds of plants are growing in the Family Garden that might have been growing in the time of the dinosaurs? Each child age 6 and up will learn about prehistoric plants and be given a ginkgo tree to take home. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register.

Players of all abilities will receive high-level soccer coaching from a team of international experts.
