WASHINGTON – On Election Day, Nov. 6, President Barack Obama was voted into his second term as head of state. Obama, 51, defeated Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney with 303 electoral votes to Romney’s 206 (as of press time, Florida’s votes still were not counted).
Obama also won the popular vote with 59,651,236 (50 percent) versus Romney’s 57,028,531 (48 percent).
When he was first elected into office in 2008, he defeated John McCain to succeed President George W. Bush as the 44th president of the United States.
Locally, the city of Campbell passed a 3-mill road levy with 51 percent approval.
Democrat David Ditzler was voted in as the newest Mahoning County commissioner with 64 percent of the vote, replacing outgoing commissioner John McNally, who opted to not run for reelection. He beat out Republican David Rossi, Independent Edward Goldner Jr. and Green Party candidate Howard Markert.
In other races, Democratic candidate Sherrod Brown (66 percent) defeated Republican Josh Mandel (29 percent) for U.S. senator and Democrat Tim Ryan (79 percent) defeated Republica Marisha Agana (21 percent) for Congress.
Mary DeGenaro (53 percent) defeated Mark Hanni (47 percent) to become judge of the Mahoning County Court of Appeals.
In the Ohio Supreme Court Justice race, Sharon Kennedy (59 percent) defeated Yvette McGee Brown (41 percent), William O’Neill (63 percent) defeated Robert Cupp (37 percent) and Terrence O’Donnell (67 percent) defeated Mike Skindell (34 percent).
Democratic candidate Noralynn Palermo (81 percent) defeated Green Party candidate Jim Villani (19 percent) for Mahoning County Recorder.
