YOUNGSTOWN – Youngstown State University’s College of Fine & Performing Arts announced a new program aimed at high school juniors and seniors who are interested in the creative or communication arts. The Creative Start program is an early immersion experience where students work directly with college faculty, technology and resources. The program is slated to begin during spring semester 2013 and is headed by Struthers native and Struthers High School graduate Justin Edwards.
Participants will explore career options at an earlier stage, giving college-bound students a valuable head start. The curriculum initially includes programs in Telecommunication Studies and Theater and Dance.
Students will attend specific sessions several times during the semester after the regular school day, utilizing the same technology, equipment and resources that are provided to YSU students. Prospective students must complete an application and have a minimum 3.0 GPA to be considered.
There is no fee to apply, however, once accepted, there is a $25 materials fee.
The Telecommunication Studies program will explore television production, audio and video editing, on-air talent, sports, news or any area in the electronic media realm. The program will offer exposure to the Emmy-nominated student-run television show Homework Express.
Those interested in the Theater and Dance track will learn about acting, dance, directing and designing (costuming, lighting, sound and stage design) and gain experience in the practical crafts involved in bringing the results of those explorations to the public stage.
