While traveling state Route 616 in Struthers at the bend in the road near Hamilton Lake, you may notice a monument standing on the banks of the west shore overlooking Hamilton Lake. This monument is dedicated to the Ohio soldiers, 13 Marines and one sailor, who died in the bombing of the Beirut barracks on Oct. 23, 1983. These soldiers served under Operation Peacekeeper. It’s only right and fitting that the memorial on state Route 616 be named “Peace Keepers Memorial.” Every October, families, friends and fellow Marines and sailors gather here to honor these men. Killed in the attack and honored on this monument is Cpl. Edward A. Johnston, a son of the Struthers community. He was the of Edwin and Mary Ann Johnston of Struthers.
The Struthers Fallen Soldiers project is a venture by several residents who are gathering information on Struthers residents who died while in service to their country.
