MARTINS FERRY – It was a defensive battle for four quarters between the 9-1 Campbell Memorial Red Devils of Campbell and the 8-2 Martins Ferry Purple Riders, so the lone touchdown of the game, a 20-yard breakaway run by Campbell’s junior Ja’les Hughes, and an Alex Sudacov point-after midway through the third quarter, proved to be the winning score for the visiting Devils.
Memorial, now 10-1, will be tested when they meet Akron Manchester (11-0) in Div. IV tournament action at Ravenna at 7 p.m this Friday night, Nov. 12.
Coach Mickey Sikora’s Red Devils, rated fourth by the Ohio High School Athletic Association, handed their new head coach and staff the win as they chalked up 173 rushing yards, 126 by Ja’les Hughes, and 98 via the pass from his brother, Lester Hughes.
The worthy receivers were Richard Bledsoe, Claxton LeBron and Anthony Rushton, while the defense was led by John Sikora, David Benedis, Tyler Abron, Cary Clinkscale, DeWaylon Letlow, Jose Martinez, Nick Opencar, Dennis Williams and Quincy Little.
Most of the MHS squad plays both ways and they all came through to protect their lead.
The Purple Rider’s QB Dorsey Moore hit 7 of 30 passes for 91 yards to receivers Anthony Phillips and Josiah Endsley.
Martin’s Ferry was 93 yards away with 2:55 to go in the fourth quarter to tie the game, but they never got beyond their own 16 and MHS took over.
