CANFIELD – Healthy young people, healthy economies and healthy communities will be the focus of a Farm to School workshop in Canfield.
Bridging the Gap From Farm to School: Connecting Schools to Local Fruit, Produce and Food will be held in Canfield on Thursday, April 18, at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm in Canfield. The farm is directly across from the Canfield Fairgrounds.
Ohio’s Farm to School Program provides youth, pre-K through college, with access to nutritious meals, while supporting local farmers and communities. This program provides children with fresh, local food, and helps them understand where their food comes from and how food choices affect their health, environment and community.
The objective of the workshop is to provide education for those interested in initiating or expanding a Farm to School program and to provide connections to build and strengthen program networks. The workshop will prepare participants to make a difference in their communities and will provide opportunities to unite professionals and their perspectives on food, health or agriculture.
Presentations will focus on opportunities to bring fresh local foods to local schools and highlight the partnerships already happening in the Mahoning Valley. Detailed information will be reviewed, including the Farm Fresh Salad Bar offered as part of the National School Lunch Program; How to feature local food items in the cafeteria; Utilizing local food items for fundraisers or special events; Using local food items in hot lunch offering or integrating Fresh Fruit & Vegetable and School Meals program; and more.
