YOUNGSTOWN – “Ragtime” returns to the Top Hat stage as part of the “flashback” season at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21, 22 and 28 and March 1, 7 and 8 at The Fairview Arts and Outreach Center, 4220 Youngstown-Poland Road.
The award-winning musical, based on the classic novel by E. L. Doctrow, is set in the melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York. Jumping from WASPy New Rochelle to Harlem, Ellis Island and back, it depicts the story of African Americans represented by pianist Coalhouse Walker Jr. (Joshua William Green) and true love, black washwoman Sarah (Nikita R. Jones). Wealthy suburbanites of an upper class white family are portrayed by Mother (Jennifer Lumley Kuczek) and the Rev. (David El’Hatton). Tateh (Brian Palumbo) and his daughter (Sophie Heschmeyer) are Jewish immigrants from Latvia living in utter poverty since arriving on Ellis Island.
The cast includes Anna Marshall (Emma Goldman), Cheney Morgan (Willie Conklin), Matthew Schomer (Henry Ford), Michael Appugliese, Aaron Franek, Steve Halas, Kenedy Jenkins, Becca Kopchak, Joe Marshall, Jennifer Milligan, Richard “Chipper” Moore, Jimmy Rosan, Mark Samuel, Denny Villa, Toni Zetts and more that 30 ensemble members portraying characters showing unbelievable courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future.
