CAMPBELL – The Campbell Memorial Red Devils moved up in the winning category last Friday night by defeating Champion 35-29 in overtime at Champion High School stadium.
Memorial’s quarterback Brandon Reyes scored a 9-yard final touchdown to gain the win and raise Memorial’s record to 4-3. They are also 3-1 in the AAC-National’s rating.
The teams were deadlocked 29-29 at the end of regulation before Reyes scored on a 9-yard dash with time running out to go ahead by six for the win. The Red Devils’ other scores came from Corey Hamilton, how took a 20-yard pass from Reyes, and Adrian Brown, who ran in another 5-yarder in the fourth quarter before the tie.
Reyes had 246 passing yards beside MHS’s 159-yard rushes. His receivers were Jay’ll Shorter with three for 85 yards, David Horvath with two for 76 yards, Hamilton with three for 45 yards and D.J. Harrison with two for 43 yards.
Struthers, now 4-3, dropped their third game of the season to the Beaver Local Beavers 21-14 in a close game, while Lowellville (1-6) fell behind, losing to McDonald 34-14 at McDonald.
In the Wildcats’ game, quarterback Gary Muntean threw a first quarter 60-yard pass to Nick Pollifrone for a 6-0 start. In the second quarter just before halftime, Beaver scored to go ahead 7-6.
By the end of the third quarter , Beaver scored on an 8-yard run to make it a 14-6 game in their favor. However, Struthers’ David Stewart scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter and Muntean threw a pass to Vince Fondozzi for 2 points to tie the score at 14-14.
With six minutes left, the Wildcats kicked to Beaver Local and they soon turned the contest around with a 40-yard touchdown pass with 56 seconds left and a 21-14 lead over the Wildcats.
A couple of fumbles and penalties figured in the final seconds as Struthers battled hard to tie the contest, but they did not get the ball until the 22 second mark. A Muntean pass to Tom Kimbrough was beaten by the clock, as Kimbrough could not get out-of-bounds in time to stop play near the goal line.
