STRUTHERS – The city received more road salt over the weekend after a two-week shortage caused by extreme conditions.

This winter’s unnaturally harsh weather forced Struthers Street Department Manager Tim Daley to order 200 tons of salt at the beginning of the month.

The first half of the order came in between Feb. 7 and 10, Daley said, and when the second half arrives, the city will have reached its limit of 600 tons that was set at the beginning of the year.

If more salt is needed after that, it will be purchased with the department’s budget, Daley said.

“You have to find a supplier that will help you out, or you have to ask for help from [Mahoning] County or the state,” he said.

Four hundred tons of salt doesn’t drive itself to the road, and Daley said the department’s handful of workers have been putting in long days.
